Maintenance Supervisor

Under the direction of the Maltings Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is accountable for asset reliability. He plans and supervises the maintenance and repair of production process related equipment, plant facilities and utility operations for the facilities. performing Project or maintenance related work may also be directed by the Mechanical Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be included):

Planned Maintenance.

  1. Understand the planned maintenance system and ensure maintenance schedules and intervals are current and accurate.
    1. Enters PM’s for existing and new equipment
    2. Generates and assigns PM’s to third party contractors
    3. Receives signed off PM sheets and ensures they are entered into the PM system
  2. Make changes to schedules based on OEM input and plant experience.
  3. Optimize schedules to ensure effective utilization of manpower and spares / consumables.
  4. Allocate schedules to appropriate personnel, audit quality of workmanship including contractors and other third party maintenance. Train and coach personnel where required.
  5. Where Operational staff is identified to perform maintenance tasks co ordinate with the Plant Manager.
  6. Analyze maintenance indicators and achieve plant benchmarks for scheduled vs unscheduled maintenance.
  7. Measure percentage completion of scheduled maintenance and ensure no Schedules older than 2 weeks.
  8. Perform work load analysis and work leveling where required.
  9. Coordinate and schedule planned maintenance with plant management to minimize disruptions to the process.
  10. Review Job cards daily. Prioritize and balance maintenance workload accordingly.
  11. Ensure loop closure on job cards to originator.
  12. Ensure that all legal, safety and housekeeping aspects are Control project logistics and cash flow. Report cost overruns. Establish, document and train operational staff on maintenance and running.
  13. Manage the scope of the design work for projects. Ensure all relevant guarantees are covered.  Liaise with local authorities in terms of compliance to local regulations.
  14. Maintains tools that belong to the Company, issues as required to third party contractors.

Unplanned / Breakdown maintenance.

  1. Respond to breakdowns and coordinate with plant management to minimize impact of breakdowns on production and quality.
  2. Review and analyze breakdowns in a multi disciplinary team environment to re engineer where required and prevent reoccurring issues. Apply analysis techniques such as 5 why and Formal Failure Analysis.
  3. Measure call-outs and reduce to acceptable limits.

Maintenance Inventory.

  1. Perform an analysis of critical equipment and develop spares inventory based on analysis.
  2. Maintain inventory and MRP. Set maximum and minimum values
  3. Achieve Company Working Capital benchmarks for inventory.

Non routine Maintenance and Minor Capital Projects.

  1. In conjunction with the Plant Manager assign miscellaneous Capital and non routine maintenance projects to maintenance personnel and supervise through to commissioning.


  1. Administer and support safety programs on site, including People Based Safety initiative.
  2. Assume responsibility for OHS standards as they apply to the maintenance department and the plant.
  3. Ensure contractor compliance with plant safety standards.
  4. Ensures lock out tag out, hot work permits, electrical classification etc are adhered to
  5. Communicates hazardous work to Production staff
  6. Develops and implements individual LOTO for all equipment on site, links to PM’s and job cards.


  1. In conjunction with plant management personnel establish the maintenance and capital expenditure budget. Administer the maintenance budget, insuring the maintenance cost parameters are not exceeded.
  2. Prepare bid documents and specifications for project and maintenance or repair contractor quotations, making potential contractors familiar with the work that is to be bid. Follow up on awarded contracts, insuring that contract specifications concerning workmanship, materials and costs are adhered to.
  3. Tender allocation.  Receive and evaluate tenders making sure that the full scope is covered.  Meet with vendors and evaluate their proficiency to carry out the work. Provide proposals for contractor selection for approval.


  1. In conjunction with the Plant Manager, assume responsibility for compliance to Environmental standards.
  2. Become familiar with Federal, State and Local permits and regulations as they apply to the plant and ensure compliance.


  1. Supervise the maintenance of supply channels for plant utilities (electricity, wells and city water system and natural gas). Supervise the maintenance of sewer flow, water sampling and wastewater treatment equipment.
  2. Supervise the maintenance and operation of hot water boilers, steam lines, high pressure vessels, and refrigeration equipment.


  1. Maintain Expertise Base. Stay abreast of technical developments in the malting industry and evaluate applicability.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage approximately skilled maintenance personnel. Assume responsibility for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the unit. This includes the implementation of a planned maintenance system, total productive maintenance and reliability centered maintenance.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Educational and Experience:

Requires a four-year college or technical equivalent and five years experience in repair and maintenance in a manufacturing environment.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret maintenance and repair technical material, blueprints, budgets and regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to present information and respond to inquiries from senior management, contractors and employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as descriptive statistics and accounting concepts.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Other Skills:

Requires ability to operate office equipment such as PC, calculator, two-way radio and telephone.
