Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (Milwaukee & Winona)

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining EH&S programs, policies and practices to create a zero incident/illness workplace culture and ensure compliance with all pertinent regulations. A significant amount of time will be spent in the production areas observing employee behaviors and coaching supervisors, front line leaders and employees on safe behaviors and practices. Furthermore, the EH&S Specialist is responsible for seeking methods to improve the overall safety culture through the five essential elements of a successful behavior based safety approach:•Accountability (management & employees)•Safe Practices (compliance & guidelines)•Education & Training (how to conduct hazard assessments & observational audits) •Observations (behavioral & conditions)•Performance Tracking (leading & lagging indicators)Essential Duties:•Coach business leaders, manager, supervisors and front line leaders on elements of behavior based safety and how to gain employee involvement and commitment to building a zero injury/illness safety culture•Perform, document, and communicate effective Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) training for all job roles, manufacturing processes or high exposure areas as driven by root cause analysis or business needs•Perform regularly scheduled inspections of employee behaviors and environmental conditions. Document results and communicate to all business leaders and front line leaders findings and follow-up actions to ensure closure of effective control methods•Plan and conduct employee training to include but not limited to: new hire orientation to company safety requirements, PPE, Forklift, Blood-borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Orientation, Machine Guarding, Emergency Action Plans, First Aid, Material Handling & Storage and Lockout/Tagout•Maintain record keeping to meet legal and corporate requirements•Partner with safety committee to investigation and identify root causes/corrective actions of all injury/illness/near misses•Compile and maintain corrective action tracking and trending systems to ensure that all hazards and issues are addressed in a timely manner•Update and maintain all OSHA required written programs•Work with vendors/suppliers for equipment and material related to EHS•Recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continuous improvements in EH&S and employee engagement•Maintain an open-door practice and exercise good judgment and transparency when surfacing day to day concerns that interrupt an employee’s ability or motivation to engage in safe behaviors•Partner with front line leaders to re-enforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the company•Responsible for assisting in the identification of possible losses; evaluating the risk in such loss exposure; developing and implementing a plan to correct or prevent a loss and audit the plan to ensure its effectiveness. •Ensure that contractors or visitors on the property are in compliance with the organization policies and safety requirements•Ensure inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and deficiencies minimized and corrected•Maintain all logs and documentation associated with permits and regulatory requirementsQualification Requirements: •Bachelor’s Degree: Environmental Health Safety or other related disciplines•Minimum of 3 years or more of hands-on safety experience in a manufacturing setting •Working knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards found under Title 29 Part 1910 of the Code of Federal Regulations, NFPA, NEC and ANSI.•Skill in behavioral based safety culture at all levels to support safety/environmental programs.•Ability to obtain required certifications that may be required by the company.•Effective oral and written communication skills.•Ability to gather and analyze technical information from a variety of sources including application of 80/20, root cause countermeasures, and lean tools•Demonstrated success in influencing leaders and employee behaviors; Prior hands-on experience in influencing leaders and employees towards engagement with behavior based safety principles. •Exposure to lean manufacturing and application of lean tools to determine root cause and counter measures. •Travel: 20-30% .
