Malteurop in Spain

Malteurop became the majority shareholder of record of Intermalta in 1991. This was an important stage in Malteurop’s development, because this equity acquisition was the group’s first investment outside France, in the San Andrian (Navarra) malting plant.

The development of beer consumption in Spain and the gradual disappearance of older facilities, in particular brewery malting houses, mean that brewers need to be accompanied in their growth by the creation of a new barley-malt-beer production chain.

New varieties of malting barley have been introduced, and an ultramodern laboratory (Ibercebadas) has been set up to serve the industry. Spain is now in a position to take full advantage of its being one of Europe’s largest barley producers to supply quality barleys and malts.

With the malting plant at Albacete (Mancha), opened in 2001, and the new plant in Seville (Andalusia) in 2008, the total capacity of Malteurop’s three plants is now 315,000 tons.
